2023 Walk Programme
December 2023 Christmas Walk
Christmas Christmas Cheer all round for the 10 ‘slightly wet’ walkers who joined us for mulled wine, mince pies and chocolate amongst the Christmas Trees. Thanks to Collette for the photos. November 2023 Elephant Trees
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our November guided walk. 26 humans and 2 dogs enjoyed beautiful sunshine and views across Weardale from the Elephant Trees.
October 2023 Tunstall Reservoir
We had a great turnout of 30 walkers for the October Wolsingham Wayfarers free guided walk. We walked an 8-mile circular route up Baal Hill, then on towards Salters gate, dropping down the track to the back of the reservoir. After our picnic break by the water, we walked back down to Wolsingham via Park wall. The weather was excellent despite the cold wind!
September 2023 Black Banks and Knitsley Fell
The September Wolsingham Wayfarers guided walk took 23 walkers up Black Banks and onto the Trig Point on Knitsley Fell. Hot and humid but thankfully the sun kept his cap on whilst we were out in the open.
August 2023 Trek and Train Special
Fantastic turnout for our August walk with a total of 43 joining us for our Trek & Train walk to Stanhope and back, with a ride on the Weardale Railway. Thanks to everyone who joined us, to the staff at the railway, and to Collette and Trevor for their photos.
July 2023 Newlands Hall
Another great turn out for the July Wolsingham Wayfarers guided walk. Although we started off in lovely warm sunshine, the heavens opened up so we didn’t even stop for lunch! A bedraggled bunch of Wayfarers returned to Wolsingham by 1pm - 6 miles! Thanks Collette Chapman for help and photos. Watch out for news of the August walk with a little difference.
June 2023 St Johns Hall
16 walkers enjoyed Wolsingham Wayfarers’ free guided walk to St John’s Hall in the glorious sunshine. The uphill climbs were rewarded by the sight of the rhododendron bushes in full bloom.
May 2023 Wolsingham Circular
26 walkers enjoyed the Wolsingham Wayfarers May walk following a 7 mile circular walk, leaving via the East End and returning via the West End. Once again we enjoyed great company in great weather.
April 2023 Tow Law
Great walk yesterday with 20 walkers enjoying the sunshine on a circular route to Tow Law.
March 2023 Tunstall Reservoir
15 walkers and 2 dogs braved the cold to enjoy beautiful winter sunshine on our 8-mile circular walk to Tunstall and back. Thanks everyone for your great company and look forward to seeing you all again next month.
February 2023 Thornley
Fantastic turnout for our February guided walk: 29 walkers and 2 dogs completed the 7 mile circular route to Thornley returning along Greenwell Edge. Once again we were blessed with great company and glorious sunshine.
January 2023 Harehope Quarry
Great turn out for our January free guided walk. 18 walkers (and 2 dogs) negotiated the mud in the winter sunshine to Harehope Quarry, before returning to Wolsingham along the river. For their efforts, they were rewarded with the ultimate fashion accessory: the official Wolsingham Wayfarers 2023 badge!!

November 2022 Wolsingham North Moor
November’s Wolsingham Wayfarer's Free Guided Walk will take place on Saturday 12th leaving Wolsingham Market Place at 10am. The 8 mile walk will be led by David Towndrow and will take in the spectacular views afforded by the heights of Wolsingham North Moor & Sand Edge. The walk is graded Moderate due to a 700ft ascent. If the weather is poor, there is an option to shorten the route to 6 miles. Once on the Moors, you are rewarded for your efforts with excellent views across Weardale to the West, and as far as the North East coastline to the East.
October 2022 Knitsley Fell
13 People and 2 dogs enjoyed the October sunshine on the Wolsingham Wayfarer’s ‘modified’ walk to Knitsley Fell. Thanks to everyone for taking part, hope to see you all again next month.
September 2022 Thornley and Helme Park
Great 8 mile walk through the mizzle to Thornley and Helme Park hotel. Unfortunately the low cloud spoilt the view but great company more than made up for it. Hope to see you all again for our October walk.
August 2022 Wolsingham North Moor
August's Wolsingham Wayfarer's Free Guided Walk will take place on Saturday 13th leaving Wolsingham Market Place at 10am. The 8 mile walk will be led by David Towndrow and will take in the spectacular views afforded by the heights of Wolsingham North Moor & Sand Edge. The walk is graded Moderate due to a 700ft ascent and some areas of bracken and heather. Once on the Moors, you are rewarded for your efforts with excellent views across Weardale to the West, and as far as the North East coastline to the East.
July 2022 Elephant Trees

June 2022 Tunstall Reservoir
June's Wolsingham Wayfarer's Free Guided Walk will take place on Saturday 11th leaving Wolsingham Market Place at 10am returning by 2pm. The 7 mile walk will be led by David, and will take in the excellent views from both sides of Waskerley Valley and around Tunstall Reservoir. The walk is graded Moderate with one short but steep climb.
May 2022 St John's Hall
Thank you to everyone who who came along to this month’s Wolsingham Wayfarers Guided Walk. 15 people and 0 dogs enjoyed an 8-mile circular walk to Shull Bank, through Drydersdale Plantation, and, after a picnic break at St. John’s Hall, down Wear Bank back to Wolsingham. The weather was wonderful as was the company. Hope to see you again next month.
April 2022 Harehope Quarry
27 people and 2 dogs enjoyed a circular walk to Harehope Quarry in the sunshine. Thank you everyone for great company and hope you enjoyed the sunshine, unicorns and peacocks. Hope to see you all again in May.
March 2022 Thornley Village via Bradley Burn
Great turnout for the March Wolsingham Wayfarers Walk. 21 humans and 3 dogs meaning 54 legs climbed Redgate Bank then down to Bradley Burn via Thornley Village. The weather behaved itself again and everyone made it back to Wolsingham safely! Hope to see you all next month.
February 2022 Tunstall Reservoir
A great turn out for the February Wolsingham Wayfarers Guided Walk. 18 humans and 4 dogs enjoyed an 8 mile circular route to Tunstall Reservoir. Thank You everyone for attending and we look forward to seeing you all again on the 2nd Saturday in March.

November 2021 Christmas Walk via Tunstall and Salters Gate
Thank You to the 15 walkers and 2 dogs for making today’s Wolsingham Wayfarers Walk so enjoyable. We climbed Black Banks and basked in the sunshine at the trig point, before dropping back down into Wolsingham via Crowsfield and Wigside.

August 2021 Tunstall Reservoir
11 walkers (and a dog) took part in the August Wolsingham Wayfarer's guided walk. The circular route took in Ladley Woods and (after a picnic break at Tunstall Resevoir), Backstone Bank and Baal Hill Wood. The weather was once again kind to us.
July 2021 Thornley Village
13 humans and 2 dogs set off in the drizzle for a 7.5 mile walk up to Thornley, dropping down into Bradley Burn then following the river back to Wolsingham.
June 2021 Tunstall and Salters Gate
11 Humans and 1 dog enjoyed the first Wolsingham Wayfarers Guided Walk since Lockdown on Saturday. The walk took us up to Salter's Gate then down the Tunstall Valley back to Wolsingham, pausing for a snack break at the reservoir (or at least whats left of it!). Thanks all for coming along, hope to see you all again for the July walk.

Meet in the car park by the village hall in Eastgate at 10am.
The walk: Walk up the valley of Rookhope Burn to Rookhope village. Over moor along Stogel Cleugh then east over Bolt’s Law. Return to Rookhope by incline. Back to Eastgate via Dodder Hill and Reahope Moor.
Approx 12 miles, moderate.

Saturday Walks
- 12 September: Thornley - Helme Park - Bradley Burn. 8 miles easy. Fields, woods and river. Bus option from Bradley Burn where we will be stopping for refreshments at the cafe
- 10 October: Tunstall Valley. 7 miles easy. Fields and tracks, with some hill work. Enjoy autumn colours and far-reaching views
- 14 November: Pikeston Fell via Doctor’s Gate. 8 miles moderate, with steep climbs and some stoney moorland tracks. The views more than make up for the hard work
- 12 December: Elephant Trees to Frosterley. 10 miles moderate with bus option at Frosterley. Fields, tracks and hills. Our traditional Xmas walk with mulled wine at the Elephant Trees and an optional tipple in one of Frosterley’s pubs. *Update: due to recent flooding, we are now doing the Tunstall Reservoir walk instead - 7-8 miles moderate*
- 9 January: Winter Tree ramble. 7 miles easy. We’ll be easing into the New Year with a gentle stroll around the fields and lanes of Wolsingham, brushing up on our winter tree ID skills along the way
- 13 February: Towdy Potts - West Biggins - Harehope Quarry. 8 miles moderate. Tracks and fields, some hillwork. We will follow the Weardale Way past Towdy Potts and West Biggins Farm, picking up the river path back to Wolsingham at Harehope Quarry. Option to leave the walk to catch the bus at Harehope

- 29 October: Black Banks and Towdy Potts. 6.5 miles easy. Fields and tracks, with some hilly sections
- 26 November: Riverside walk to Frosterley. 6 miles easy, bus option from Frosterley. Fields and tracks. We’ll be stopping off at the Black Bull for a Xmas tipple
- 31 December: a short walk around Wolsingham. We will finish at a local establishment to celebrate the New Year
- 28 January: Greenwell Edge and Bradley Burn. 6.5 miles easy. Fields and tracks, with some hill work. Bus option from Bradley Burn where we will stop for refreshments
- 25 February: Ladley - Newlands Hall - Lason Field. 5.5 miles easy. Fields, tracks and woodland

Saturday 14 December 2013 - Xmas Walk - Frosterley via the Elephant Trees. Climb up to the Elephant Trees, then downhill along fields and footpaths. Xmas drinks at the Black Bull Frosterley. Moderate to hard. 9 miles or return by bus after 6 miles.
