North Pennines Walking Festival

9/27/2015

We hosted the first walk of the North Pennines Walking Festival yesterday (well OK, we were walk no. 3, but it was still the first day). Seven humans and one dog walked 15 miles along the Weardale Way from Wolsingham to Rookhope. We took a few detours to avoid some poorly maintained sections of the Way, so we only actually saw the river twice! The weather was dry but muggy, and we only met one grumpy cow, two walkers and LOTS of C2C cyclists. Photos on Flickr

The North Pennines Walking Festival is nearly here, and we are hosting the first walk - the Weardale Way from Wolsingham to Rookhope (16 miles). The festival caters for all abilities and ages, and the theme this year is the Pennine Way.

Diana Denbury, Festival organiser, says "This year's festival will run from Saturday 26th September to Sunday 4th October 2015 and the programme aims to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Pennine Way, however, it will also encompass and celebrate other long-distance trails within the North Pennines AONB, such as the Weardale & Teesdale Way, Bowes loop and Isaac’s Tea Trail. Additional walks such as the Ravenber's Way will also feature in the programme."

To view the walks and book your place please visit the Friends of the North Pennines website.

We have completely revamped our series of walk leaflets. The routes have been simplified, the step-by-step instructions improved, and new photos added. Outlets up and down the dale are carrying our leaflets, and some have already run out! Pick up your free copy, or download a printable version from our website.

Thanks to Ian (design and re-write) and Yasmine (photos)!

We won an award!

Oops, we forgot to announce here that we won an award. We won "Volunteer Group of the Year" at the County Durham Environment Awards, held on 13 November 2014. This was for "an outstanding contribution to the improvement, understanding and promotion of the quality and appearance of the environment of the Weardale countryside and the commitment of all volunteers".

You can see the award for yourself - just pop into the Black Lion in Meadhope Street. It takes pride of place on the corner shelf by the fire.

The photo below shows Yasmine, Ian and Neil receiving the award from John Robinson, chairman of Durham County Council.
